A Father’s plea to His prodigal children

A Father’s plea to His prodigal children

Speaker: Pr Darren Burnett

This sermon on Isaiah 1:1-31 was preached at WPC Belconnen’s Sunday morning service on July 3, 2022.

In Isaiah 1, God summons His sinful people Israel to a trial in court. And while there is much discussion of their sin, the punishment to come and also God’s promise to spare a remnant, this introduction was given to encourage the people of Israel – and especially the generation who later read the Book of Isaiah while they were languishing in exile in Babylon. This introduction addresses such questions as ‘How can a holy God rule his people who continue to spurn him as King?’ ‘How can a holy God keep his promises to bless all nations through the Davidic kingship when the Davidic kings are faithless?’ ‘How can God redeem the entire world, which languishes under the curse wrought on it when humans rejected His sovereignty?’ It becomes clear, as we study the prophecies of Isaiah, that God’s plan to save a rebellious people from their sin and constant rebellion against Him, ultimately involves sending a better King than the kings of Judah, and a better servant than the faithless people.
