This sermon, which expounds John 4:27-42, was preached at WPC Belconnen on Sunday morning, October 30, 2022.
In this passage, the Apostle John records the second half of his account of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well. This is the first case of cross-cultural missions in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus has been speaking with a woman at a well near the Samaritan town of Sychar. In verse 27, we read that Jesus’ disciples have returned from town and find Him teaching a Samaritan woman – breaking all kinds of Jewish taboos. But Jesus was not concerned with the prejudices of His day. He was concerned with graciously revealing Himself as the Messiah to a kingdom outsider. And in her joy at realising that Jesus is the promised Saviour, the woman rushes back to her town to tell her neighbours. And the passage concludes with a village of Samaritans coming to saving faith in Jesus and boldly declaring, ‘this is indeed the Saviour of the world.’
