This sermon, which was preached at WPC Belconnen at our Sunday evening service on August 8, 2021, examines Ecclesiastes 4-6. At the evening services in term three, we have been studying the Book of Ecclesiastes, this profound book of wisdom penned by King Solomon. In his examiniation of ‘life under the sun,’ Solomon noted that life is full of uncertainty – there is corruption and injustice all around. Solomon concluded that living for riches is meaningless – people die in the pursuit of money, and just leave it all to someone who comes after them. In his examination of the ‘futility’ of life in this world, Solomon’s conclusions about where meaning in live can be found echoes Jesus’ teaching that life only works when we build it on Him. Living for the stuff of this life leads to despair or frustration and ultimately ends in our destruction. But living life as a follower of Jesus is the only way to live a life of meaning and purpose and joy.
