This sermon was preached at WPC Belconnen’s evening service on August 1, 2021. Don read the text for us before the sermon.
In Ecclesiastes 1 and 2, Solomon examines the meaninglessness, the frustration and vanity of trying to find joy and meaning and purpose in life while living only for himself. In chapter 2, verse 24, an older, wiser Solomon stops his recounting of his worldly explorations and looks at life lived under God – that is, life lived in relationship to God and considering God’s revealed will and plans for us. We see that the way out of despair and meaninglessness as we live life in this broken world, is by looking up – to God. The only way to know meaning and joy and peace in this life is by looking to the One who saves us from sin and death and meaninglessness and the judgment to come – our Lord Jesus.
