This sermon was preached at WPC Belconnen’s morning service on May 16, 2021. Don read the Bible passage, John 1:19-24, and Darren gave the Bible talk.
In Isaiah 40:3-4, the prophet Isaiah wrote that foretells that before God would come to reveal His glory, He would send before Him a messenger to prepare the people for the coming of God. We read, in that passage, ‘A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”’ (ESV) We know that God always keeps His promises. And in John 1:19-34, we see how God fulfilled the promises of Isaiah 40 in the coming of Jesus. John the Baptist was the man God sent to prepare Israel for the return of God’s glory. And this is why John was commanding everyone to repent and be baptized – Israel needed to cleanse itself and get ready for the return of the King.
