This sermon on Psalm 22 was preached at WPC Belconnen at our evening service on May 2, 2021. Rob brought us the reading and Darren gave the message.
Every Christian will, from time to time, go through times of suffering, loneliness and sorrow. When we do, it is important that we know the comfort that God gives us in our grief. When suffering comes, we need care from God and from others. We need a listening ear at these times. We need community, love, support, prayer, and worship. And we need psalms like Psalm 22 – a psalm of terrible lament – a Psalm written by King David during one of his dark nights of the soul. And this psalm’s opening lines were the words Jesus cried from the cross when He was genuinely and absolutely abandoned by His Father, as He bore our sins upon the cross.
