Signs always point to a greater reality. In John’s Gospel, John describes the miracles Jesus did as “signs”. He calls them that because they point to a greater reality beyond themselves. In John 2:11, John tells us that the turning of water into wine was the first of Jesus’ “signs”. This miracle, like all of Jesus’ miracles, was a sign telling the people who were there important information about Jesus and His mission. Jesus’ signs revealed to Israel the amazing truth that in Jesus the Kingdom of God, with all of its blessings, had arrived at last.
