Trusting in God in the midst of the storm

Trusting in God in the midst of the storm

Speaker: Pr Darren Burnett

This sermon was preached at WPC Belconnen at our evening service on May 23, 2021. Rob read the text, Psalm 46, and Darren gave the Bible talk.

When we read Psalm 46, we may be reminded of Martin Luther’s famous hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our God. This hymn was inspired by Psalm 46, which was Luther’s favourite Psalm. Luther wrote, “We sing this psalm to the praise of God, because God is with us and powerfully and miraculously preserves and defends his church and his word against all fanatical spirits, against the gates of hell, against the implacable hatred of the devil, and against all the assaults of the world, the flesh and sin.” Like Luther, we are living during a time of great anxiety, uncertainty and turmoil. Psalms like Psalm 46 give us great comfort as they remind us that God is still sovereign, He is in control and we can trust Him even, and especially, in the midst of the storms that come our way.  As we study Psalm 46, I trust we will again be filled with a sense of wonder and awe at our God. And it is my hope is that we will see why this was the favourite psalm of Martin Luther – a man who lived most of his life in the face of danger and under threat from many enemies.
